Becoming a mother changes everything. No matter how prepared you think you are, nothing fully gets you ready for how it feels, physically, emotionally, and mentally. For me, the postpartum period was one of the most challenging times of my life. And, it’s what led me to create something I wish I had back then: a safe, supportive space for moms to find the care they deserve.
I had the opportunity to talk with Shae Spitz on R.E.A.L. Moms Podcast about my journey through postpartum, motherhood, and building my business. In this post, I’m sharing the key things we discussed during our conversation.
Why It’s So Much Harder for Moms in the US
When I moved to the US from Nepal to complete my medical residency, I was excited to grow my career and start a family. But when I gave birth here, I quickly noticed something that shocked me: how lonely and overwhelming the postpartum period can be in this country.
In Nepal, postpartum recovery is not something women go through alone. It’s a community effort. Family and friends are part of the process. There’s help with cooking, cleaning, childcare, and even massages to support healing. You’re surrounded by people who understand what your body and mind are going through.
But here in the US, the pressure to bounce back is intense. There’s not enough support. Many moms are back at work within weeks. Others don’t have family nearby or can’t afford extra help. You’re expected to keep up with everything and still smile like you’ve got it all together. This cultural gap is something I couldn’t ignore. It’s one of the biggest reasons I knew something needed to change.
Creating Momkinz Out of My Own Pain
In my postpartum experience, I was working night shifts while raising a child with special needs. I wasn’t sleeping, I was in constant pain, and I felt completely disconnected from myself. Even though I had medical training, I didn’t know how to make it all stop.
Eventually, I hit a wall. I decided to leave my job and take care of my health. I switched to telemedicine, which gave me the flexibility I needed. Slowly, I started to feel like myself again. I wasn’t surviving anymore; I was living. And then I thought, if it took me this long to figure it out, how many other moms are still struggling without answers? That’s when the idea for Momkinz was born.
What Is Momkinz, and How Does It Work?
I designed Momkinz to make it easier for moms to find trustworthy, culturally sensitive, and evidence-based postpartum services. Think of it as a postpartum directory, like Yelp, but for new moms.
Through Momkinz, you can:
- Find mental health providers
- Connect with lactation consultants
- Discover postpartum massage therapists
- Learn from nutrition experts
- And more!
You don’t need to spend hours searching online or wondering if someone really understands what you’re going through. We bring the right providers to you, all in one place. We also have a growing community, plus free downloadable guides and ebooks to help you through your postpartum journey. Right now, we’re focused on North Carolina, but we’re working hard to expand to more states soon because every mom deserves support, no matter where she lives!
Real Life Doesn’t Need Perfect Balance, Just Clarity
People love to talk about “balance” like it’s something you can finally achieve if you just try hard enough. However, I don’t believe in balance like that anymore. What I’ve learned is that life gets easier when you focus on what really matters and let go of the rest. That’s how you protect your energy.
Here are a few things that helped me:
- Let go of perfection. The house doesn’t need to be spotless.
- Delegate. Ask your partner, your kids, or your support system to step in.
- Protect your time. Say no to what drains you. Say yes to what feeds you.
- Give yourself permission. Permission to rest, to ask for help, and not to have all the answers.
These small changes helped me go from burnout to clarity. I hope they can do the same for you.
Why Self-Care Isn’t Optional
Taking care of yourself is not selfish; it’s essential! I used to put myself last. I thought being a good mom meant doing everything for everyone else. But I was running on empty. And when your cup is empty, you can’t pour into others.
Now, I start my mornings with lemon water. I journal, I stretch, and I fuel my body with good food. These little acts of care changed everything for me. They helped me feel strong again in my body and in my mind.
Words of Encouragement for Moms with Big Dreams
If you’re a mom who’s also dreaming about starting something of your own, whether it’s a business, a blog, or a passion project, here’s what I want to tell you: Start where you are!
- You don’t need to have it all figured out.
- You don’t need to wait until you feel “ready.”
- Just take one small step at a time.
- Progress matters more than perfection.
- Ask for help or invest in support.
- Don’t be afraid to share your story. You never know who needs to hear it.
